1st Grade- Radial Symmetry Snowflakes

The weather is getting colder, and we're hoping for snow in Texas!

Like many other things in nature, snowflakes have radial symmetry, which means that they're the same all the way around. To learn more about radial symmetry check out this informative slideshow:


In first grade, we used paper and scissors to create snowflakes that are the same all the way around.

Although the each have radial symmetry, no two snowflakes are alike and neither are our artworks!

5th Grade - Radial Initials

We used our initials to create this design.  They can be seen in the negative space.  In thepositive spaces, we created different values of colored pencils by applying varying pressures.

Like the sun that radiates heat from the center, our radial designs are the same all the way around from the center.

  Can you guess how we replicated the letters all the way around?  Ask a 5th grader.







3rd Grade- Radial Symmetry Weavings

We learned about people from many cultures who use weavings for both functional and decorative purposes. Our weavings are functional for holding coins, or something solid, but not for eating out of.
The weavings we've created with yarn and a paper plate are symmetrical from the center and all the way around in a circle. This is called radial symmetry.



In radial weaving, artists weave in and out of spokes- not unlike the structure of spokes on a bicycle or car wheel. Wouldn't a bike look interesting with yarn weaved through it's spokes?
